HearStrong Champion

Mackenzie Tucker

Student • Advocate

My favorite sound is listening to music because it’s so emotional and expressive, and stimulates my mind in a positive way.

Discovering Hearing Loss

Mackenzie was almost three years old before her parents discovered she had auditory neuropathy. Because Mackenzie was not yet speaking, her speech therapist suggested she have her hearing re-tested. After discovering she had hearing loss, Mackenzie’s parents decided to have her fit with cochlear implants so she could have the necessary tools for success.

Overcoming Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can often make you feel like you are “different.” Being a teenager with hearing loss can be challenging, but despite the hardships that hearing loss brings, Mackenzie has demonstrated resilience. Mackenzie has not let hearing loss stop her from being the person she wants to be, or from doing the things she is passionate about. Although cochlear implants have helped Mackenzie tremendously, her unwillingness to let hearing loss be a definer has illustrated her true strength and capabilities.

“Mackenzie has stood up for her own needs and for acceptance of her differences. She is sharing her story to inspire change, acceptance, and inclusion.” –Mackenzie’s mother

Mackenzie is able to self-express through different outlets such as listening to music and writing. Mackenzie’s creative abilities shine through in her writing because it is an opportunity for self-expression. Mackenzie’s optimism and determination are what has helped her overcome hearing loss. In addition, Mackenzie is heavily involved in various clubs and was recently elected to be the Social Action Vice President for the NFTY, a Regional Jewish Youth Movement.

Why Mackenzie is a HearStrong Champion

Mackenzie is a HearStrong Champion because she wants to help other people have their own voices heard. Mackenzie wants to be recognized for her own identity. Even though Mackenzie’s hearing journey has not been easy, she has continued to prove that hearing loss is not a definer.
