On March 27, the HearStrong Foundation recognized Rachael Burns, Miss Texas International 2014, as a HearStrong Champion for her passionate dedication to overcoming hearing loss and inspiring others to do the same.

San Antonio, TX (March 31, 2015)—Rachael Burns, Miss Texas International 2014, recently earned another distinctive title—HearStrong Champion.

During the 2015 AudiologyNOW! Convention in San Antonio, TX, on March 27, the HearStrong Foundation recognized Rachael for her determination in overcoming her hearing loss to achieve her personal and professional goals.

Rachael first experienced hearing loss following a childhood case of meningitis. Initially embarrassed by her new difficulty, Rachael was hesitant to utilize hearing devices. But as a young adult preparing for the professional world, she decided it was time to embrace hearing technology and stop missing out on the people and things that matter most to her—including pageants.

For several years, Rachael had unsuccessfully competed in the Miss Texas International competition. But after accepting her hearing loss and developing a hearing loss-focused platform—Conquer. Live. Repeat.—she was able to shine and take home the title in 2014.

However, despite finding solutions for her hearing loss, Rachael still struggled with increasingly debilitating tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. But thanks to a generous donation by ReSound, one of the world’s leading hearing technology manufacturers, following the ceremony, Rachael’s tinnitus may have finally met its match.

Inspired by Rachael’s journey and hearing health advocacy work, the ReSound team gifted Rachael with a brand new pair of hearing devices.

“Rachael doesn’t just challenge the stereotypes surrounding hearing loss and hearing devices—she shatters them,” said Ed Keller, president and founder of the HearStrong Foundation. “By continuing to share her personal experiences and further developing her own advocacy message, Rachael will truly help change the way people view hearing healthcare.”
