On April 7, 2017, HearStrong took its mission to Indianapolis, Indiana, the location of the hearing healthcare industry’s largest trade show. Each year, hearing healthcare professionals, advocates, and students attend AudiologyNOW! to collaborate and learn about the latest developments in the industry. At the 2017 conference, HearStrong held a special ceremony to honor Drew Newquist as a Champion. Vaughn Broadnax, former Ohio State football player, joined the organization as an ambassador to help honor Drew.
HearStrong’s mission is to recognize the accomplishments of those who have overcome hearing loss. The organization serves to celebrate individuals, worldwide, who have not only faced hearing loss, but conquered it with a determined spirit, a focused mind and an unwavering heart! These individuals are named as HearStrong Champions.
Drew, a student and history buff, was diagnosed with hearing loss at four years old after having some problems with his speech. His diagnosis was a surprise to his parents, but after being fit with his first pair of hearing aids, he realized how much he had been missing.
Today, Drew says his hearing aids have helped him excel academically, athletically, and socially. He advocates for others with hearing loss and encourages them to seek treatment. When asked what advice he would give people who have yet to treat their hearing loss, he says, “I would tell them to definitely seek assistance because life is much easier with hearing aids or devices to help. It makes me sad to think people, especially youth, would let their hearing challenges keep them from pursuing goals or meeting others.”
At the ceremony in Indianapolis, Drew was recognized for his determination and encouragement to others. After sharing his personal journey with hearing loss, he was presented with a medal and given the responsibility of being a HearStrong Champion.
With outstanding advocates like Drew, HearStrong can continue to break down barriers and raise awareness for the 38 million individuals with untreated hearing loss!
