Tailar’s parents noticed her hearing loss when she was about nine months old.
"They said that they would call me several times, but I would not hear them and I would continue to crawl away," she shares.
Her parents soon decided to have Tailar fit with hearing aids, and as her hearing worsened, she received cochlear implants at the age of four.
"I will never forget the moment when my cochlear implant was first turned on," Tailar says. "Prior to receiving cochlear implants, I would only use single words and not speak in complete sentences… Needless to say, I have come a long way!"
For Tailar, her cochlear implants have made a world of difference. She says they help her communicate with family, friends, and her teammates when she plays volleyball.
Tailar is a full-time college student who loves to watch movies, go shopping, and play volleyball.
Along with her volleyball team at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, Tailar participates in many community efforts to help troubled teens. When she is at home in Michigan, she volunteers through local churches and at the Gleaners Food Bank to help the less fortunate.
"My biggest role model is Michelle Obama because she inspires women to take care of their health, further their education, be leaders, and fight for women’s rights," Tailar shares.
Tailar is a HearStrong Champion because she is hard-working, confident, and honest. She is never afraid to advocate for herself and for others.
"I always work hard on and off the court," she says. "I take pride in the work I put in toward my academics. I go the extra mile to seek help from teachers or support staff whenever I need it."
