When Jacqueline's younger brother was diagnosed with hearing loss, the audiologist suggested the whole family get tested. Jacqueline was the last one to be tested and she was fit with her first hearing aid at the age of 14, right before she started high school. It is believed, however, that she has had hearing loss since birth.
"Before the diagnosis, all I ever knew was my hearing loss," she said. "I thought I was hearing like everyone else."
Jacqueline's audiologist, Brian McClintok, has been by her side for over ten years and inspired her to go into the field of audiology. She is now working toward her doctoral degree. She says,
"I chose my career because of my hearing loss. I have a lot of special moments with my patients when they find out I have hearing loss and wear hearing aids. It's like a lightbulb goes off in their heads and they think, 'She gets me. She understands.' Having hearing loss allows me to let my patients know it's going to be okay.
I am determined to share my passion for audiology with every patient I have. I am able to relate to my patients in ways most audiologists can't. It is my goal to show compassion and understanding to every patient and provide them with the best care so they can hear better."
Jacqueline also inspires others by speaking out about her hearing loss and more. She is a lector at her church, and also does lectures at local community centers about hearing loss.
Jacqueline is a HearStrong Champion because she is passionate about making a difference in the lives of those with hearing loss.
