From: Palos Hills, IL
Nominated by: Sertoma Speech and Hearing Center in Palos Hills, IL
When he was just six months old, a hearing screening revealed that Brett had severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. He received his first pair of hearing aids from The Sertoma Speech and Hearing Center shortly thereafter.
While growing up, Brett had a hero to show him that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. His grandfather, who lived in an orphanage until the age of ten, is a Navy veteran who served in World War II. Today, Brett thinks of his grandfather and knows that he can overcome any challenges that come with his hearing loss.
An honors student, Brett cannot imagine his life without his devices. They have given him the confidence he needed to find success both in school and in his extracurricular activities.
“[My] hearing aids and FM system [have] allowed me to better communicate with friends, teammates, and teachers every day,” Brett says. “It is like night and day between wearing hearing aids and not wearing them.”
Brett plays baseball and basketball for his school, and he will soon join the communications club as well. He also volunteers his time teaching kids to play baseball and softball, and he’s even helped out at baseball camps for kids with special needs.
Brett is successful in school and volunteers his time to help others. His hearing loss has never stopped him from doing the things that are important to him.
“I am a 15 year old normal boy who is a good student and good athlete who happens to wear hearing aids,” he says. “[My hearing loss] will never define me, but I will always want to help others cope with their hearing loss.”
