From: Orchard Park, NY
Brendan was diagnosed with moderate to severe bilateral hearing loss shortly after his birth. Wanting their son to experience his world as fully as possible, Brendan’s parents decided to have him fitted with hearing devices. After receiving his first pair at the age of 18 months, Brendan never looked back.
Thanks to his early adoption of hearing devices, Brendan adapted to the technology quite naturally. He never takes his ability to hear better for granted, and he values the many benefits that his hearing devices bring to his life. “I am able to feel involved and interact in personal relationships. (Hearing better) allows me to function normally with my peers. I am able to function independently in the classroom and academic life.”
Sports have always been a big passion of Brendan’s, much like his cousin, professional hockey player Patrick Kane. But rather than hockey, Brendan’s sport is lacrosse.
“Despite his hearing loss, Brendan shined while on the lacrosse field,” said Brendan’s mom, Kathy. “He had a true love for the game that was obvious to his teammates, coaches, and fans. Brendan held himself to high expectations and was always willing to work with teammates to improve the team. He received numerous awards and was honored to be the captain of his team.”
Today, as a successful college student, Brendan dedicates much of his time to his studies. In his not-so-spare time, he works at People, Inc. to assist his paraplegic friend with his day-to-day needs.
“Brendan’s compassion for others is what makes him so unique and inspiring to those around him,” said Kathy. “Brendan is both an honorable and deserving young man.”
