Austin cannot remember a time when he did not have hearing aids. As his older sister had already been diagnosed with hearing loss, his parents had his hearing tested shortly after he was born. Thanks to this early detection and acceptance, Austin was fitted with hearing aids as an infant.
“I think that my hearing loss has helped my relationships with people because it has allowed me to understand the hardships and difficulties that [others] face in their life,” Austin says.
He also feels that without his hearing aids and FM system, it would have been much harder for him to connect to other students and teachers.
Austin has been awarded numerous “student of the month” awards throughout high school, and has been elected into the National Honor Society. He is also a leader in a group called Aevidum which seeks to create positive mental health environments where all students feel accepted, appreciated, acknowledged, and cared for in schools and communities across the nation. What’s more, Austin is an accomplished 3-sport athlete—playing tennis, basketball, and soccer.
“...Hearing loss has forced me to work harder every day to show everybody that anybody can achieve anything no matter who they are. So overall, I believe hearing loss has given me the determination to become something great in the world.”
Austin is an accomplished 3-sport athlete and 4.0 student who is very active in his community.
Austin advises those who are reluctant to seek hearing health assistance to take action. “...I know that hearing [better] not only helps yourself, but it also helps the people you are closest to,” he says.
