From: Overland Park, Kansas
Alexandra was two years old when her parents started to see signs of hearing loss. She was not responding and speaking as she should, so they decided to take her to an audiologist. She was diagnosed with hearing loss soon after.
"Years later, I can appreciate the quick response that my parents made," says Alexandra. "I entered my first years of school with the appropriate aids and development plan to keep me on track. I'm proud to say that I've been a 4.0 student during my entire (high school) educational career."
In addition to her great academic successes, Alexandra is a volleyball player, and has coached fourth graders at a recreational level. She also created a volleyball summer camp for kids with and without disabilities, so they could have fun, feel accepted, and make new friends.
Alexandra claims that her hearing aids have made a significant impact on her life.
"Without them I'm at a tremendous disadvantage," she says. "We live in an audible society, therefore my hearing aids give me the freedom to communicate with my family and friends. I couldn't imagine not having them on a daily basis… they truly have changed my life!"
Alexandra is a HearStrong Champion because she is committed to helping others have fun, and do what they love, regardless of what obstacles they may face. She believes it is important to address issues related to hearing, and she advocates for the use of hearing technology.
"I think receiving treatment for hearing loss is important so you can live your life the best you can," she says. "Communication really is the key to great relationships and opportunities, and you can't do that unless you have the ability to listen to others and respond according to what they are saying. Receiving treatment is giving you a better quality of life, and is nothing anyone should ever be ashamed of."
